THE MANILA ADVENTIST--ANGELO KING MEDICAL CENTER SPECIAL PROJECTby Wilson A. Sia IIThe Adventist Medical Center Manila (AMCM), formerly Manila Sanitarium and Hospital, in partnership with Angelo King Foundation, Inc. (AKFI) laid the time capsule of The Manila Adventist – Angelo King Medical Center on November 11, 2012 which coincided with the 86th birthday of Mr. Angelo King, the “King of Philanthropy”. This 12-storey building is part of the comprehensive expansion project of the hospital and also will enlarge the legacy of AKFI to the Adventist community for the benefit of the Filipino people. This event was attended by leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist church from Southern–Asia Pacific territory; officers of AKFI; national and local government officials; and partners in the healthcare industry. AMCM’s 83 years of track record in preventive and curative healthcare will continue to a greater extent as AKFI supports it in the realization of its grander vision for greater service. This soon-to-rise edifice will empower AMCM’s advocacy on heart wellness, with its commitment to continue the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in this part of the world.

Adventist Medical Center ManilaReminiscence of the Past 80 YearsAdventist Medical Center Manila was known before as Manila Sanitarium and Hospital (MSH). It was started as a clinic at the corner of Vermont Street (now Julio Nakpil Street) and Indiana Street, Malate, Manila, in July 1929 by Dr. Horace A. Hall, an Adventist medical missionary from the United States. The services were primarily for the Adventists living in Manila and neighboring provinces. As demands for more services increased, the clinic was converted to a small hospital with a three-storey building. Among the first group of workers who helped in the early days of MSH were Mrs. Hazel Sevrens, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Jeys, Dr. & Mrs. H. Honor, Dr. Vera Honor, Mrs. E. Moon (wife of the president of Philippine Publishing House, and Mrs. Teodora M. Beltran, the first Filipina helper who worked as a receptionist, interpreter, and nurse aide. In 1930, the MSH School of Nursing was opened and maintained by Ms. Fannie Hiday, an American nurse; followed by Ms. Bessie Irvine, and Ms. Bertha Parker. In 1967, Philippine Union College (now Adventist University of the Philippines) absorbed the school and MSH simply provided the facility for the clinical division. A two and a half acre lot was bought in 1940 at the corner of Donada Street and San Juan Street and a four-storey building was built which is now part of the infrastructure at the current location. Services was interrupted when the Japanese Imperial Army took over MSH during the 2nd World War. The Japanese used MSH as a navy hospital from January 1942 to February 1945. Through the years MAMC developed. The proofs of its progress specifically from year 2ooo to the present are the following: Hemodialysis Unit, Minimart, Cardiology Section, Water Filling Section, Endoscopy Unit, EEG Unit & Child- Adult Neurology Clinic, TB Dots Clinic, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Pastoral Education, and Animal Bite Center.
The Adventist Medical Center Manila has been established with the following: Vision To be the best wholistic healthcare provider by the year 2015. Mission To continue the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Mantra We care. We share.
